Process to Create Synthetic Crude and Extract Battery Metals Underway

Alberta’s oil and gas industry produces enormous quantities of a toxic waste product for which there does not (yet) exist an ecologically worthwhile usage.

MGX Minerals Inc. today announced that "additional work" has commenced with its engineering partner Highbury Energy Inc. in regards of the ongoing development of a novel process for the gasification of petroleum coke ("petcoke"), an increasingly problematic waste product from the oil and gas industry.

It is already known that both companies are working on the extraction of the battery metals – vanadium, nickel and cobalt – from gasified petcoke ash. Apparently, they may have a solution for turning petcoke into a synthetic liquid equivalent to crude oil. The "expanded research and development" now targets a specification to allow for reuse of petcoke.

Currently, crude oil is used as feedstock in refineries to produce petro-chemical products. MGX-Highbury are now on a mission to replace such crude oil usage with the reuse of a cheap and abundant waste product (petcoke) into "a primary input equivalent to crude oil that can be upgraded into petro-chemical products in a traditional refinery without any modifications to existing infrastructure. The goal is to produce a fuel which can seamlessly integrate into existing refinery operations. This represents a potential long-term use for the large existing stockpiles of petcoke as well as ongoing output of petcoke and other waste products without significant changes to the existing refinery infrastructure."

The potential implications for the industry, and environment, are tremendous, because petcoke is readily available in large quantities on-site. In 2016, Alberta’s petcoke waste dumps were estimated to have grown to 106 million tons (the more oilsand and refinery production, the more petcoke). Reusing such a polluting waste product as a "renewable" and somewhat replacing crude oil could mean the equivalent of finding something like "the holy grail" in the oil patch. Producing the same chemistry with a different feedstock, and simultaneously reducing the baneful burden of petcoke waste dumps, translates into a sustainable, meaningful and powerful leverage of existing infrastructure. As MGX-Highbury continue to report progress about their novel gasification and extraction technologies, they are becoming leading pioneers in a sub-industry that urgently demands cleantech solutions, opening up new markets and opportunities of inconceivable proportions.
